Version control systems are probably one of the most useful tools I have ever found. I store everything from shell scripts, to source code, to family photos, to configuration files, to the kitchen sink. And, since I run my own Subversion serve, I can create repositories with abandon. In fact, each software module I develop for each customer gets a private repository. Considering how dependent I am on Subversion, it only follows that I need to make sure my Subversion server is completely bullet proof, or at least thoroughly backed up. Although the drive system utilized is a RAID10 with multiple hot spares, I still did not feel secure knowing the the building could burn down and I could still lose everything. So, I needed a more integrated way of backing up Subversion, but without the price tag of expensive backup solutions one can purchase online. This is where my knack for automation scripting jumps off the bench and yells, "Put me in coach!"

Well, it is about time someone made installing flash easy, especially for Ubuntu 64bit. As usual, I found myself scouring the internet in search of a surefire way of installing flash into Firefox (and maybe even Opera) without any guesswork. Well, I took the best suggestions, from all over the internet and made a single script that just works--EVERYTIME! It does not matter if you are running feisty fawn, gutsy gibbon, hardy heron, intrepid ibex, karmic koala, etc. It does not matter if you are running 32bit or 64bit. It does not matter if you use Firefox or Opera. This script just works. Oh, and it even works with Pulseaudio. So, download the file or copy and paste the script as normal. Don't forget to chmod +x and run with sudo. Enjoy.

It took me some time to figure out the surefire way to get DVD playback working in Ubuntu. I have seen MANY tutorials and forums all giving clues to the solution, but noone seems to post a complete step by step solution. This solution works for me every time. I use it to configure 4 different systems with completely different components. Simply run this script as root, reboot*, and enjoy the show with the totem command, or Movie Player in the Sound & Video submenu of the programs menu.

Linux: Change DHCP IP to Static IP |

Introduction
For most GUI based options, converting a DHCP IP setup to a static IP setup is not difficult...if you have a straight forward network setup. If, for example, you have a wireless nic, and you want it to connect to the network without logging into Gnome, then you may have a manual setup for your wireless authentication and encryption. Setting a static IP in this case may not be possible (or at least easy) with any GUI tools. Also, GUI tools are simply not available on many server configurations. This solution works on all versions of Ubuntu at least up to 8.04.1. It most likely works on many other distros. But, I use Ubuntu for everything and thus don't have a convenient way to test other distros. If you have any questions about this code, feel free to e-mail me: anthony@hildoersystems.com.
